Internship in Discrete Structures – Summer or Fall 2026

The Laboratory for Timber Construction (IBOIS) at EPFL aims to develop the next generation of timber construction, using a wide range of timber products—from natural wood resources to engineered materials.

  • Master’s-level student in Civil Engineering or a related field

Description of Work

Discrete Structures
This project approaches construction at the element level, rethinking the connections between individual components. The work focuses on analyzing design methods for serial connections, with the goal of redefining discrete structures, the role of connections, and the design of serial joints.

Main tasks:

  1. Investigate simplified methods for sizing serial metal and timber joints, including:
    • Serial bolted plate joints
    • Serial screw joints
    • Serial tenon joints
  2. Perform calculations on joints in three round-log prototypes built at IBOIS

Duration and Work Details

  • For EPFL students:
    Summer or semester-long position on an hourly basis (minimum 8 hours per week, on a fixed day)
  • For external candidates:
    Minimum 6-month full-time position
