Instructions for Doctoral Candidates

Each Doctoral Candidate who has passed his/her candidacy exam by January 1st 2021 is required to make a “poster presentation” about his/her thesis work.

All EDMX Doctoral Candidates are required to attend the Research Day, but only those making a poster presentation are required to register for the event.

Students who will have their private thesis defense before March 10th do not need to prepare a poster, but are still encouraged to attend the Research Day if their schedule allows it.

Registering for EDMX Research Day

To register for the event, please use the following Google form, where you will need to provide us with your name, email address, the title of your work and your research area. You will also need to provide us with the link to your uploaded video presentation on SWITCHtube as well as the personal Zoom meeting link for the poster session. The Zoom link should work on the day of the event.

This year’s edition will again include short pitch talks (~1 min) about the topic presented on your poster. The pitch talks will be made live during the event. If you would like to pitch your poster, please indicate this in your registration. It’s a great public speaking exercise!

The deadline for submitting your completed registration is Monday, February 1st. This means your video presentation should also be uploaded by this time.

Uploading Your Poster Presentation

Due to the online nature of the event, this year’s poster presentation will be in the form of a short, pre-recorded presentation of ~3 minutes followed by live, online discussion sessions. You are largely free to make the presentation as you see fit (short power point, navigating around a digital poster, scientific demonstration, etc.). Once recorded, you will upload the presentation to SWITCHtube, where others will be able to browse and watch the presentations in advance of the event. You can upload your presentation here: https://go.epfl.ch/EDMX-SWITCHtube

Please include your abstract in the dedicated text box. The title of the video should be your name followed by the title of your project. You can change the thumbnail by selecting one of the proposed ones, or upload your own image. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about it. In this case, send an email to [email protected]

Preparing for the Live “Poster” Session

EDMX Research Day will also feature a live poster session for discussion. We will split Doctoral Candidates into one of two poster sessions according to your sciper number (the number on your camipro card). The poster session for odd-numbered scipers is from 14:45 to 15:30 and the poster session for even-numbered sciper numbers is from 15:30 to 16:15.

During your poster session, you should be available in a personal Zoom meeting in order to answer questions and present your work to other members of our materials science community who may be interested. The jury might also ask you some questions to help them select the best presentation! To do this, please schedule the Zoom meeting in advance, and provide us with the Zoom link during registration.

During the poster session, we encourage you to visit other students’ sessions to discuss their work with them! The more active your participation, the more you will get out of this experience and the closer our community will become!

The list of participants in each poster session will be posted online, so please check our website to find each person’s Zoom link for the sessions. These will be posted a few days after registration closes.
