The Business Intelligence unit is responsible for providing the EPFL community with data-driven management solutions and services. It designs, operates and develops the institutional BI platform, integrating SAP BW/4HANA and Tableau technologies in particular, in order to guarantee the quality, consistency and availability of management information.
Its objectives are to support decision-making, promote self-service BI and foster a data culture at EPFL by assisting business departments in leveraging and governing their data.
Main activities
Data collection and integration
- Retrieval and integration of data from source systems (Finance, HR, Purchasing, Academic, etc.).
- Data modelling in the institutional Data Warehouse (SAP BW/4HANA).
Production of reports and analyses
- Design and maintenance of dashboards and reports for strategic and operational management.
- Distribution of key indicators to management, departments and faculties via Tableau.
Business support and self-service BI
- Supporting users in analysing and understanding data.
- Supporting business units in the deployment of self-service BI
Data quality, consistency and governance
- Verification and continuous improvement of data quality and reliability.
- Contribution to data governance (repositories, documentation, data catalogue).
Innovation and development of the BI platform
- Technology watch, architecture modernisation (BW/4HANA migration, virtualisation, cloud).
- Exploration of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics solutions.
Institutional collaboration
- Working closely with business lines and units to ensure consistency across the information system.
- Support for major transformation programmes (e.g. Nexus, Plexus, Data Management Programme).
