MEMS and Printed Microsystems

Our goal  is to develop environmentally-conscious microfabrication processes and microsystems. We believe that the implementation of microsystem solutions can not only improve resource management and energy efficiency, but that their production, operation and final disposal should be environmentally-sustainable as well. The research performed is oriented towards resource saving, utmost energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies.

– Environmentally-friendly and sustainable MEMS processes and materials.

We are developing MEMS based on materials and processes that enable the effective utilization of resources and energy during their production. We are looking at the development of efficient industrial fabrication processes, such as additive fabrication process, at low energy, allowing high flexibility and application versatility and avoid the use noble and scarce metals and toxic elements, for instance. The developments target the generation of sustainable, reusable, recyclable and environmental friendly devices and systems.

– Microsystems for green and environmental applications.

We are working on the application of MEMS that are beneficial for the environment with the development of environmental sensors of different kinds. We are also addressing the minimization of the energy required for the operation of the systems by developing ultra-low power microsystems, MEMS and electronics devices. Moreover, we are looking at energy and power generation for the development of autonomous and autarkic MEMS devices and wireless sensing systems.

Our three principal research themes consist of:

– Green microtechnologies and microfabrication

– Ultra low energy MEMS technologies: production and operation

– Energy harvesting and saving technologies: green and environmental applications
