Earthen structures (i.e., structures using soil as a construction material) possess many of the necessary characteristics for a green and circular construction industry. Nevertheless, construction of new earthen structures is in decline worldwide mostly because earth is not considered a robust and safe construction material.

The objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to investigate and exploit the mechanical characteristics of soil in order to build seismic-resistant earthen structures. This will be achieved with a combination of experimental work for mechanical characterization and the development of numerical tools for the design and structural analysis of earthen structures.

Your Profile: You have a Master’s Degree in civil or structural engineering. A strong background in structural mechanics is required. Knowledge in soil mechanics and earthquake engineering is of advantage but not mandatory. Good programming skills are necessary. You are proficient in spoken and written English.

We offer: We are offering excellent research facilities and a competitive salary. The EPFL offers an outstanding international ecosystem full of training and development opportunities. The Ph.D. student will be enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (EDCE). More information on Ph.D. studies at EPFL can be found here.

Many historical structures are constructed as stone masonry structures. These structures are among the most vulnerable when subjected to seismic loading. This Ph.D. thesis develops new approaches for the simulation of stone masonry structures.

Your profile: You have a Master’s degree in structural/civil engineering and a strong background in structural mechanics and finite element simulations. Knowledge of masonry mechanics is of advantage. Very good programming skills are required. You are proficient in spoken and written English.
