Colonialism: Switzerland’s involvement

Cultural Outing: Exploring Switzerland’s Colonial Ties
Join us for a fascinating day out to discover a compelling exhibition at the Château de Prangins. The official promotional photo features a pith helmet, strikingly illustrating the complex and ambivalent involvement of Swiss missions in the colonial enterprise. Based on the latest historical research, this exhibition—a first for French-speaking Switzerland—offers a comprehensive overview of the country’s multifaceted relationship with colonialism. The journey comes to life through a rich collection of period objects, archival documents, paintings, and photographs, shedding light on the dual role played by Swiss missionaries in the colonial economy of the time.
Historical Context
As early as the 16th century, Swiss citizens and businesses were deeply embedded in colonial networks. While some built fortunes through the transatlantic slave trade and the exploitation of enslaved labor, others traveled the world as missionaries. Poverty or a thirst for adventure also drove many Swiss to enlist as mercenaries in European armies, taking part in territorial conquests and the violent suppression of indigenous resistance. Meanwhile, Swiss experts lent their knowledge to colonial powers, and the universities of Geneva and Zurich taught and spread racist theories that gained international traction, helping to legitimize the colonial system.
