Measurement devices

Over the past 20 years, the GIS platform has kept pace with developments in measurement systems to ensure that it remains at the cutting edge.

In addition to traditional sensors, the development of full-field measurement by imaging (DIC), fiber optic integration to measure deformation profiles, and 3D scanning technics were implemented in the platform.

Full-field measurements DIC

Over the last 15 years, the GIS platform has acquired considerable expertise in digital image correlation (DIC). With the evolution of the industrial camera, this technique allows full-field displacement and strain measurements without contact. The use of this technology has revolutionized civil engineering measurements, opening up new possibilities and reducing testing times.

Today, the GIS platform is equipped with several cameras, lenses and lighting to cover 3D or 2D measurement applications from small to large-sized areas.

  • measurement area : 5cm2 to 10m2
  • resolution range : 2 to 150 MPix
  • lenses : 8 – 75 mm of focal length C and F mount
  • LED lighting

In its years of use, the platform has acquired a great deal of experience in setting up cameras and applying speckles to different types of surfaces.

Optical fiber

Since 2018, the GIS platform has acquired expertise with optical fiber integration in different types of materials.

Today, the platform has several optical interrogators from the company LUNA Innovation and tools to splice and calibrate universal optical fiber originating from the communication market:

  • strain profile measurement length up to 20m
  • spacial resolution from 0.65mm
  • 9/125 polyimide-coated optical fiber

During these years, the GIS platform has acquired expertise in integrating optical fibers in steel rebars, concrete and composite surfaces.

Outdoor optical fiber integration and measurements were also carried out on concrete bridges and wind turbine blades.

Traditional sensors and DAQ

Parallel to the development of new measurement techniques, the GIS platform completes and maintains up-to-date traditional sensors and data acquisition systems DAQ:

  • load cells : 1000kN in tension to 3000kN in compression
  • displacement sensors : 1mm to 1000mm
  • inclinometers : 1° to 60°
  • thermocouples type K
  • accelerometers low frequencies : 0-200Hz
  • pressure sensors : 100 to 1000bar
  • strain gages

To view and acquire data during test applications, the GIS platform is equipped with several high-precision DAQ devices. These DAQ devices can be synchronized to provide hundreds of measurement channels.

Over the years, the GIS platform has also acquired expertise in strain gage installation on steel, concrete and composite materials. Outdoor measurement monitoring campaigns were also carried out on bridges and wind turbines.
