Environment and sustainability

A multilevel analysis of votes on environmental issues

Research project on the acceptability of environmental taxes and other instruments for environmental protection. We analysed the motivations of voters in Swiss referendums on nature conservation measures or taxes that could have a beneficial effect on nature. In a second stage, we conducted an analysis of the acceptability and implementation of environmental measures at the legislative level. A survey was conducted among public administrators and other experts responsible for sustainable development. Doctoral thesis by Nicholas Bornstein, funded by SNF. (2004-2007)

Project sustainability assessment – Economic aspects

The aim of the project was to validate economic criteria for use in sustainability assessments of different types of projects (construction, changes in legislation, etc.). Based on existing principles and criteria (Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, Monet, Indicator Circle, Compass21, etc.), the aim was to consolidate, document and validate relevant economic criteria, complementary to the environmental and social criteria already defined. These criteria had to be understandable to non-specialists and practical to implement. The approach was participatory and accompanied by a working group within the framework of the group for the exchange of experiences on sustainability assessment at local level.
