Projects can be purely computational, for example to explore high-dimensional omic data sets from both single cell or bulk samples to study (mesenchymal) stem cell differentiation trajectories and the underlying regulatory networks or to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying regulatory and phenotypic variation. In addition, we have several technology-centric projects incorporating in-house developed high-throughput or microfluidic tools to study transcription factor behavior or to perform cellular phenotyping, coupling high-resolution imaging to transcriptomic read-outs of single cells.
Our current opportunities are listed below:
IRIS is a deterministic microfluidic platform integrating high-throughput live-cell imaging and AI-driven analysis for single-cell phenomics. Our platform bridges fundamental cell biology with biomedical and biomanufacturing applications (Ref 1). We are looking for two motivated Master’s students to join the instrument development team and contribute to the next generation of IRIS hardware.
What you will do
- Design, prototype, and test instrument subassemblies
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team
- Contribute to solving real-world engineering challenges on a first-of-its-kind laboratory instrument
Tracks (two positions, one per track > matched to your background)
- Mechatronics & Microfluidics: Design and integration of mechanical and fluidic assemblies; fluidic component design, development, and characterization
- Electronics & Optics: Electrical control system development, hardware integration, and optical subsystem design/integration
Who we are looking for
- Master’s students in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Optics/Photonics, Biomedical Engineering, Microengineering
- Hands-on mindset with interest in instrument development and prototyping
- Experience with CAD, electronics, embedded systems, optics, microfluidics, or lab instrumentation is a plus
