I chose the Thomä Lab because of my personal and academic interest in cancer research. My research project was about molecular glues, specifically the VHL E3 ligase complex. I worked on applying different molecular glue compounds to yeast two-hybrid assays to assess their ability to induce protein-protein interactions. The lab environment was efficient and collaborative. I particularly liked how each lab member looked out for each other, whether it was making extra buffer, helping with an experiment, or sharing supplies. I also loved working with my co-intern, who had a similar project; we both learned from each other daily, troubleshooting experiments and celebrating small wins together. EPFL was vibrant and full of energy. I loved getting to know the people who lived in Atrium and across campus. The location near Lake Geneva and the Alps made it easy to plan outdoor activities after work. We hosted BBQ nights, karaoke sessions, and evening walks that brought the intern community together in a really special way. The internship experience abroad taught me the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, adaptability in a new environment, and how research can feel both challenging and exciting when surrounded by supportive peers. It also helped me grow more confident as a young researcher, deepening my commitment to global health innovation. For future interns, I highly recommend making the most of both the research and the people. Say yes to random trips, ask questions in lab meetings, and don’t be afraid to explore something completely new. Switzerland was both stunning and surprising. Compared to the U.S., it felt more structured and quiet, but in the best way. Trains were always on time, and every town, no matter how small, looked like a postcard. I enjoyed hiking in the Alps the most, waking up early to take a train to Lauterbrunnen or Basel and then walking through meadows with cowbells echoing in the distance felt surreal. One surprise was how truly common it is to see cows on all hikes in Switzerland. But I also loved discovering local traditions, like the Fête de Lausanne or eating raclette for the first time. On weekends, Switzerland taught me to slow down, savor the view, and make the most of every sunny day.
