The CO2 footprint represents only one part of the sustainability indicators and does not reflect the entirety of the institution’s environmental impact. Although this indicator offers an informative perspective on the carbon footprint, calculation methods and data collection are subject to change. Some areas, such as construction or certain research-related activities are not included or are roughly estimated.

The 2030 goal is based on a 40% reduction compared to 2019 (goal coming from EPFL’s sustainability strategy), as well as on the Swiss Confederation’s goals to reduce emissions from air travel by 30% compared to 2019 and energy-related emissions by 50% compared to 2006.
