Minors allow master students to complement the learning in their main discipline with knowledge related to another field of competence. EPFL offers a wide choice of minors, each amounting to 30 ECTS credits, which must be acquired over the course of the Master’s program. The minor is mentioned in the Diploma Supplement.
There are two types of minors:
1. interdisciplinary minor, focuses on a given field and made up of topics and courses from several EPFL study programs: dedicated webpage
Interdisciplinary Minors recommended by the SIE Section for SIE master students:
- Minor in Engineering for Sustainability
- Energy
- Biotechnology
- Integrated Design, Architecture and Sustainability (IDEAS)
- Imaging
2. disciplinary minor, focuses on a single master program, different from that of the student’s main Master’s program: dedicated webpage
Disciplinary Minors recommended by the SIE Section for SIE master students:
- Computational Science – course list (IC School – IN Section)
- Data Science – course list (IC School – SC Section)
- Computational Sciences and Engineering – course list (SB School – MA Section)
For non-SIE master students who want to take the SIE disciplinary minor:
the minor’s course list must include 2 courses from Block 2 “Core Courses” of the SIE Master’s study plan . The remaining courses have to be selected in the SIE Optional courses group. Block 1 (projects group) is not accessible for the SIE Disciplinary Minor.
For SIE master students who want to take a disciplinary minor: please check the rules with the section of the master program.
- Each student wishing to complete a minor fills out a registration form with a list of courses they have selected;
- During the first week of the first semester, these students contact the minor leader to discuss their choice of courses;
- Then, these students contact the section assistant to discuss this choice and the organization of their year;
- The registration form must be signed by the person in charge of the Minor concerned and submitted to the SIE section’s secretary before 15th October of each year.
- In case a minor is dropped over the course of studies, the SIE section determines the number of credits that may be validated for transfer to the optional group. Dropping a minor late in the program may result in a loss of credits.
