Delighted to have joined the very first scientific deployment of the Swiss sailing vessel Forel under the FlagShip GreenFjord project, supported by the Swiss Polar Institute, to measure methane and nitrous oxide in South Greenland’s fjords.
Date : September, 2024
Location : Southwest Greenland (Narsaq – Qaqortoq – Ikersuaq Fjord [aka Bredefjord] – Nordre Sermilik); ~60.7–61.9° N, 46.1–49.1° W, altitude 0–500 m.
-
Narsaq ≈ 60.91° N, 46.05° W
-
Qaqortoq ≈ 60.72° N, 46.03° W;
-
Ikersuaq Fjord
-
Sermilik (SW) ≈ 61.87° N, 49.10° W
Team members : Samuel Jaccard, Julia Schmale, Jérôme Chappellaz, Sébastien Lavanchy, Christel Hassler, Virginie Marques and Mihnea Surdu.
Activities: First scientific deployment of SubOcean instruments to measure dissolved methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in the fjords of Southwest Greenland (Narsaq – Qaqortoq – Ikersuaq/Bredefjord – Sermilik). The team also performed complementary sampling with Niskin bottles, CTD probes, and environmental DNA to study water chemistry, nutrient dynamics, and microbial communities.
