Biography
Guilherme Almeida is a R&D Fabrication Engineer in the group of Tobias Kippenberg responsible for the fabrication of photonic integrated circuits at the CMi.
He received his M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering in 2011 from the NOVA University of Lisbon performing his thesis project at Imperial College London under the supervision of Geoff Kelsall. He obtained his PhD in 2018 in the group of Liberato Manna at the Italian Institute of Technology on colloidal semiconductor nanostructures for electronic and photonic applications. He then conducted postdoctoral research on III-V quantum dots at TU Delft in the group of Arjan Houtepen at TU Delft, partially funded by major LED companies.
At the beginning of his career, he also worked as a junior researcher in photo-chemistry at the Institute for Chemical and Biological Technology in Lisbon and later as a R&D engineer in transparent electronics at the Center of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronics Processes, also in Lisbon. Later, he also conducted research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as a visiting postdoc.

Biography
Upon joining LPQM group at EPFL, I led a project which pioneered the direction of strongly coupled high-Q optical resonators providing theoretical support. Versatile numerical simulations revealed a number of novel phenomena including soliton hopping, the periodic appearance of commensurate and incommensurate dispersive waves, symmetry breaking related to the discreteness of the system.

Yi Xia obtained his Ph.D. in optical sciences from the University of Arizona. His Ph.D. research focused on distributed quantum sensing with continuous-variable multipartite entangled states and quantum machine learning under the supervision of Prof. Zheshen Zhang. Then he stayed in the same group working on entanglement-enhanced optomechanical sensing in collaboration with Prof. Dalziel Wilson. Upon joining the LPQM at EPFL, he works on quantum optomechanics with ultra-coherent mechanical oscillators.
