Cardiac Heart Failure (CHF) disease is now one of the most important cardiac illnesses. It can be anticipated that in the future more emphasis will be placed on early detection and better treatment of this disease.That is the reason why the main objective of this three year interdisciplinary research project is the design and the development of an innovative deep implant specially tailored for the continuous monitoring (24 hours per day/7 days per week) and treatment of cardiac heart failure patients. When discussing the effect of therapies and follow up of the cardiac heart failure patients, the regular assessment of hemodynamics is crucial. Therefore, different cardiac parameters will be measured thanks to implanted sensors to monitor continuously heart failure patients The continuous information collected during the patients’ daily activities will improve the early detection of hemodynamic changes by showing additional data unavailable today, and it will adapt their treatments by providing feedback on how the patients react to the prescribed drugs.This continuous monitoring will be obtained thanks to the design of an innovative remotely powered sensor node which will be deeply implanted in the body. The output measurements of the sensor node will be time-stamped, normalized and compressed in-situ thus demanding the design of ultra-low-power signal processing algorithms. These measurements will be transmitted wirelessly to an external base station.The electronic building blocks of the implanted sensor node will be designed in CMOS technology. The dimensions of the sensor node will be a key factor in enabling its implantation at a location deep inside the body.
