Why are memories lost during neurodegeneration such as in Alzheimer’s Disease?

While we certainly do not have a definite answer to this question, we believe that malfunctioning epigenetic mechanisms contribute to the development of cognitive decline during neurodegeneration. The next issues to be addressed are what triggers such malfunctioning, and how can we counteract it? To this end, we are on the one hand using a combination of genetic and environmental tools to mimic neurodegeneration in the mouse, and on the other hand environmental and pharmacological approaches against it.
