Stereo Spectacular. Paris Universal Exposition, 1867

OPENING SOON

Stereo Spectacular reconstructs the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 using archival stereographic pairs, creating an immersive visitor experience that restages and deconstructs the scopic and cultural regimes of the 19th-century World’s Fair. Equipped with active 3D glasses, visitors become participants in a unique exploration of the 1867 exhibition, virtually wandering through the heart of the Exhibition Park and its photographic archive. The event attracted over 50’000 visitors and 32 countries. More than 1’400 historic images are embedded at points that reflect the original positions of the objects and scenes they display, allowing 21st-century visitors to stand in reconstructed historical viewpoints. Stereo Spectacular will be presented at the National Archives of France, that holds one of the largest collections of stereoscopic photographs of the 1867 Paris Exposition.

The project is a collaboration between EPFL and the University of Paris Cité.
