Internship Description:
AFRICAVENIR has initiated a community-based Wi-Fi network to improve internet access for students in primary and secondary schools and for low-income residents. To expand this network to remote villages, the organization aims to optimize frequency usage and reduce signal interference, thereby improving the quality of service.
Using QGIS, the internship will focus on:
-
Data Collection & Mapping:
-
Importing base maps (OpenStreetMap, Google Satellite) of the intervention zone.
-
Mapping topography, elevation, terrain, buildings, and other obstacles.
-
Identifying existing Wi-Fi infrastructure and their frequency ranges.
-
Pinpointing potential interference sources (e.g., 4G/5G towers, radio transmitters).
-
-
Wi-Fi Frequency Integration:
-
Creating GIS layers to represent 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands.
-
Linking spectrum data with each access point.
-
-
Interference Simulation & Visualization:
-
Simulating signal coverage using tools like Viewshed Analysis or Radio Mobile.
-
Producing heatmaps to show high-interference zones.
-
-
Optimizing Antenna Placement:
-
Georeferencing current and proposed antenna locations.
-
Recommending optimal deployment zones based on terrain and interference levels.
-
Assigning frequency channels by analyzing interference density.
-
Testing and comparing deployment scenarios.
-
Using Network Analyst for connection optimization and Spatial Analyst for advanced data processing.
-
Intern Profile – Required Skills and Qualities
Technical Skills:
-
Academic background in geomatics or geospatial engineering.
-
Proficient with GIS tools, including both raster and vector data handling.
-
Familiarity with spatial databases and geostatistical methods.
Analytical Skills:
-
Strong spatial analysis and critical thinking skills.
-
Ability to interpret GIS data and draw practical insights.
Communication Skills:
-
Capable of presenting technical results clearly to non-specialists.
-
Good visual design sense for creating clear and effective maps.
Internship Logistics
Duration: 8 weeks
