In April 2014 Julian Lienhard completed his doctorate summa cum laude with his dissertation on bending-active structures at the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design, University of Stuttgart. He is co-author of the specialist book ‘Construction Manual for Polymers + Mem-branes’ and has been honored by several awards during his academic career. Along with a number of different design studios, he is teaching the Principles of Form and Structure at the University of Stuttgart, the Technical University of Vienna and since 2016 as a Visiting Professor at HCU Hamburg. His scientific interest in the principles of lightweight structures goes along with various real­ized experimental structures and prototypes along his academic and professional career. This forms the basis of his international structural engineering consultancy as a recognized specialist in lightweight and special structures.

In 2008, Julian co-founded the engineering and design practice studioLD now str.ucture GmbH. Previously, he worked as a Structural Engineer at Knippers- Helbig and SL-Rasch in Stuttgart.

Frei Otto: Spanning the Future is a documentary about the incredible life and work of Frei Otto. As an architect and engineer he laid the foundation for contemporary lightweight architecture, and his ideas are still awe inspiring decades after he revealed them. This fact was cemented when he was named the 2015 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
