Editorial: EPFL continues its mission in education, research, and innovation

Dear readers,

Welcome to EPFL’s 2025 annual report! On this page, you’ll find our School’s highlights from last year as well as our key figures and consolidated financial statements. And to give you a sense of our community’s energy, creativity and engagement with society, we’ve included a selection of the 1,388 news articles that we published on our website in 2025. If I had to point to just one initiative, it would be the Apertus language model that we developed with ETH Zurich, as it perfectly embodies our drive to make a concrete impact with our research.

At EPFL, we nurture excellence, bold thinking and curiosity. Our leadership team is constantly building on these convictions in order to provide our students with the best possible education, push the boundaries of research and translate our breakthroughs into tangible benefits for society. And because our campuses help define our community, we’re working to ensure they remain vibrant and sustainable.

This annual report provides a look back at a year full of achievements and positive momentum. I would like to sincerely thank our colleagues, partner organizations and public-sector stakeholders for their trust and support last year as we upgraded our infrastructure, revamped how we teach and stepped up our contribution to the economy and society. The growing number of people who attend our talks and workshops and view our digital content shows that EPFL has been successful in turning scientific discovery into a driver of societal progress.
