EPFL launches a new initiative to fund Solutions4Sustainability
The entire EPFL community is invited to propose sustainable solutions for reducing our energy dependence and carbon footprint as well as leveraging EPFL’s capabilities in research and innovation around Green Energy, Storage and Sustainability (GESS) and Carbon capture, Usage and Storage to create an excellence area with demonstrators on our Campus and solutions ready for scale-up.
The deadline was on 15 January 2023. The call is now closed.
Only PIs who have been invited to submit a full proposal for a large-scale project can submit their application by the deadline of 17 March 2023 (at 17:00 CET).

The initiative aims at developing sustainable solutions for reducing our energy dependence and carbon footprint as well as leveraging EPFL’s capabilities in research and innovation around Green Energy, Storage and Sustainability (GESS) as well as Carbon capture, Usage and Storage to create an excellence area with demonstrators on our Campus and solutions ready for scale-up.

The objective is to identify:
- by early 2023 two ambitious mission-oriented solutions to GESS developed in EPFL laboratories and demonstrate by 2027 their feasibility, possibly on campus, and their scalability for large societal use;
- Identify up to 10 short-term and mid-term solutions coming from EPFL laboratories that could significantly reduce the CO2 footprint, in particular of the EPFL campus. The solutions must be ready to be implemented by the end of 2024.

The call for proposals is open to the entire EPFL community (faculty, researchers, collaborators, students). Proposals must be written jointly with at least one EPFL faculty member.

As a complimentary action, in order to involve the student community, an Energy/Sustainability Hackathon will be organized to generate concrete, everyday actions towards a sustainable future. It will take place during the winter – stay tuned for more information.

Up to 10 Mio CHF will be allocated to short or mid-term projects that are envisaged to span 1-2 years with a maximum funding of 1 Mio CHF each. Outcomes must be applicable on campus by the end of 2024 through demonstrators with an exploration on the scalability in society.
Up to 20 Mio CHF will be allocated to large projects that are envisaged to span 6 years (2 phases of 3 years) with a total funding up to 10 Mio CHF each.

As part of the evaluation process, clarifications and project merger can be requested if deemed suitable. The Committee shall prepare a ranked list and recommendations for funding to the EPFL Direction for final decision of the grantees.

Project funding will start at the earliest on 1 May 2023.
