Marcus Böhme

With over 14 years of experience in life sciences and global R&D, Dr. Marcus Böhme is recognized as a global leader in microbiota-gut-brain axis research and psychobiotics. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience and has authored 27 publications, including in Nature Aging, Molecular Psychiatry, and Microbiome with over 8,000 citations. Dr. Böhme specializes in understanding how microbial and mammalian signalling pathways interact to influence brain function, resilience, and aging. Through his experiences in academia, followed by industry, Dr. Böhme has deep insights into the entire process of probiotics development, including translating cutting-edge insights into innovative, evidence‑based solutions for mental health, designing and formulating probiotic products. Previously, Dr. Böhme worked as the Global Science & Technology Lead for Mental Health at Novonesis, where he shaped the global innovation portfolio and future pipeline, and has beenactively involved in scouting external opportunities, including scientific due diligence for in‑licensing and acquisitions, while working closely with key opinion leaders and academic partners. Prior to this, Dr. Böhme worked at Nestlé Research as Gut-Brain Axis Lead Scientist and advisor on biotic solutions for mental health within the Nestlé Probiotic Strategic Network. He completed his postdoctoral research at the APC Microbiome Institute (University College Cork) under Prof. John Cryan and Prof. Ted Dinan, co‑managing a European JPI HDHL project on the gut microbiome, stress, and cognition across the lifespan, and researching microbiome‑mediated mechanisms of brain health, including brain aging.
