THEMA

Theory of Environment and Materials in Architecture

THEMA is a laboratory in architecture at EPFL studying the material, construction, and afterlives of architecture and its entanglements. It is comprised of Assistant Professor Sarah Nichols, postdoctoral researcher Laurin Baumgardt, scientific assistants Marion Moutal and Alexandros Trivizas, doctoral candidates Tiffanie Paré and Akshar Gajjar, administrative manager Valérie Pahud, and, for 2025-2026, student assistants Fanny Bernard and Emmanuelle Ebuenga.

THEMA operates both as an acronym (Theory of Environment and Material in Architecture) that describes the scope of ambition for our research and teaching and as a noun (theme) that is used to introduce specific topics under this big tent.
