Chair of Mathematical Statistics

SMAT

Welcome to the Chair of Mathematical Statistics held by Victor Panaretos

Broadly speaking, the research activity of the Chair of Mathematical
Statistics focuses on probability modeling and statistical inference for
functional and geometrical data and associated statistical inverse
problems in the natural sciences. Particular emphasis is given on
problems arising in biophysics, mathematical biology and high energy
physics. Focal points include:

  • Functional data analysis (second-order functional inference,
frequency analysis of Hilbertian time series)
  • Shape theory and stochastic geometry (projected shapes, unlabelled
    shape analysis, shape diffusions)
  • Statistical inverse problems (random tomography, infinite-dimensional
    testing, density unfolding problems)
  • Statistical inference for stochastic processes (partially observed
    branching and birth-death processes)

Our methodological and theoretical work in these areas is connected
with the analysis of data arising in cryo-electron microscopy,
molecular dynamics, protein matching, epidemiology and fundamental
particle detection.

Our work has been supported by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant Award, and by grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation.
