PhD Position(s)

Applications are invited for a PhD position in Statistics at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

The position will be in the Chair of Statistical Data Science, under the supervision of Prof. Sofia Olhede.

The envisioned research projects fall within the broad theme of statistical analysis of interactions, either pairwise or multiple actors. The overarching goal is not only to extend classical statistical ideas into this setting, but also to exploit phenomena unique to collections of discrete random variables.

Possible directions include:

  • Analysis of multiple sets of interactions, such as multiple networks or multiple weighted networks.
  • Analysis of multiple actor interactions such as higher-order interactions of either fixed or variable orders.
  • General non-parametric analysis techniques suitable for observations known to satisfy a distributional permutation invariance

The position will be available as of September 1st, 2026.

Candidates should preferably hold a degree in mathematics and/or statistics, or in EECS with a solid mathematical background. Knowledge of French is not a requirement, but will be helpful.

The PhD applicants should apply directly through EDMA, mentioning Prof. Sofia Olhede at the appropriate field, for the December 15th deadline.

Short-listed candidates may be invited for an interview.
