Cascade impactors are aerosol instruments designed to collect size-fractionated aerosol samples onto removable substrates. This allows gravimetric and chemical analyses to be conducted on different particle size fractions. Impactors can be used for a wide variety of applications, including ambient sampling. The Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI 110 NR, TSI, MI, USA) enables the collection and segregation of aerosols into 10 different size cuts, ranging from 18 μm to 0.056 μm. Particles are collected by impacting them onto a surface, or ‘substrate’, in a sequential—or “cascading”—fashion, where the largest particles are collected first and the smallest particles last.
