Big competition

Big competition

Robopoly held a special event during the second semester of each academic year, called the Grand Competition. Offering a wide range of prizes, these competitions were open to both beginners and experienced players: everyone was eligible to participate. Experienced members shouldn’t underestimate their competitors: surprises often abound!

The committee has decided to cancel the 2019-2020 Grand Concours due to the COVID-19 situation.

Indeed, the campus was closed to access, which meant that our infrastructure and tools, which would have allowed for proper preparation for the competition, were unavailable. As a result, participants would not have had the time they needed to build their robots and train on the field.

The 2018-2019 Grand Competition was held on Sunday, April 28, 2019, on the EPFL campus. It was open to everyone (Robopoly members or not), regardless of robotics level or age. Programming workshops were held alongside the robotics tournament. These workshops were free and open to all. The rules can be downloaded below.

We all know that exercising is essential for staying healthy. Running, basketball, javelin throwing, curling—there’s no shortage of disciplines, and everyone can find something to enjoy while exercising. Playing a sport is so important and requires so much dedication that we reward those who excel through various competitions. But don’t robots have the right to stretch their muscles a little too?

This year, Robopoly has decided to put the robots to the test in a sports competition. Between downhill skiing, tchoukball matches, and weight training, the robots will be able to show us how to handle their bolts. Numerous prizes will be up for grabs for the teams that build the most athletic robots, including a 3D printer.

Cooking is a chore many students would like to avoid. While the vast majority make do with a simple pasta with butter and grated cheese at the beginning of the month, others, worthy of the EPFL engineers’ name, have imagined and developed autonomous cooking robots capable of preparing their mother’s meals in their hard lives as roommates.

They’ll be judged in a competition combining all types of haute cuisine, before a jury more demanding than Gordon Ramsay. Will they be able to differentiate between salt and sugar? Make a chocolate fondant that’s neither overcooked nor too raw? And prepare whipped cream that’s less dense than air? In any case, the robot capable of bankrupting the hotel school could leave with the TEVO Tornado 3D printer or one of the other fabulous prizes.

This year we meet again the SAT agency which has decided to carry out analyses on the Martian soil. Established for almost 6 months, the mission brings a new scientific understanding of the functioning of this planet. Unfortunately, an unexpected surface storm moves quickly towards the base camp, thus forcing the premature termination of the mission. Aboard your Rover, you must reach the rocket located above as quickly as possible in order to proceed with the evacuation of the planet.

Context

The SAT agency recently discovered some astonishing properties in lunar dust. A new space program, aimed at sending humans to the moon to further research this subject, was urgently launched. Unfortunately, due to the haste caused by the strange discovery, the spacecraft carrying the first crew crashed on the moon without any survivors.

Since the next human team won’t be available for several months, the agency has contacted Robopoly to send a robot capable of gathering the still-working equipment and beginning construction of the center. It’s up to you to show that we can trust you to complete this task!
