Through serial sectioning, FIB becomes a tomographic tool.  A region of interest is first protected by a deposited material. Milling a hole in front of it, a flat surface perpendicular to the surface is then obtained. Slices are cut though the region of interest taking image between each slice. Through the various SEM detectors, rich 3D information becomes accessible.
