By selectively emitting thermal radiation through the Earth’s “atmospheric window” (the 8–13 µm infrared band where the atmosphere is largely transparent), passive radiative panels continuously dumps excess heat straight into outer space, allowing its surface (and whatever it’s attached to) to stay several degrees cooler than the surrounding air—even under direct sunlight.
