2014, Alexander Smorgonskiy receives the Young Scientist Award at the 32nd International Conference on Lightning Protection, Shanghai, China

Alexander Smorgonskiy of the EMC Laboratory of EPFL was the recipient of the Young Scientist Award at the 32nd International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP) which was held in Shanghai, China, October 13-17, 2014.

Alexander Smorgonskiy received this award for a paper entitled ‘Analysis of Lightning Events Preceding Upward Flashes from Gaisberg and Säntis Towers’.

The presented work provides insight into the mechanisms of initiation of upward lightning flashes, an important issue in lightning research and in lightning protection of tall structures such as wind turbines.

The work has been carried out within the framework of a research project on lightning protection of wind turbines in cooperation with Juvent SA and funded by the BKW Ecology Fund.

The ICLP was established in 1951 by a group of eminent scientists and is now considered to be the most prestigious scientific conference in the field of physics of lightning discharges and lightning protection.
