Bioaerosols are tiny airborne particles of biological origin, including bacteria, fungi, pollen, viruses, algae fragments, and other organic matter. The Arctic atmosphere is exceptionally clean and contains relatively low concentrations of aerosol particles. As a result, even small changes in bioaerosol abundance can have a disproportionately large impact on cloud formation and atmospheric chemistry. Consequently, bioaerosols play a key role in understanding Arctic climate feedback and improving climate model predictions.
The Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS) enables real-time, single-particle measurements of atmospheric bioaerosols. It provides information on individual particle size, shape, and fluorescence characteristics, allowing the classification of different types of bioaerosol particles. During the summers of 2025 and 2026, WIBS measurements were collected in the fjords along the west coast of Greenland.
The aim of this internship/semester project is to process and analyze the WIBS dataset. Specifically, the student will apply statistical methods to characterize the types of bioaerosols present in the pristine Arctic environment and investigate their variability under different environmental conditions. The results will contribute to a better understanding of Arctic bioaerosols and their role in the atmosphere.
