What is a clicker?

It is an audience response system that encourages students to participate in class by submitting responses to interactive questions. Student can submit answers with either a clicker box or a connected device (smartphone, laptop…).

Clickers at EPFL

EPFL uses the Turning Technologies products. We currently have about 1’300 clickers and 700 smartphone licences.

An example of use

Clickers can be used in a wide range of contexts and with a lot of different methods.

Do I need a clicker?

Some instructors use clickers, some don’t. Your professors will tell you if you need a clicker. If you have several classes using clickers, you can use the same clicker for them all.

How to get equipped?

For each course, your professors will tell you if you have to borrow a clicker box or if you can use your smartphone.

Borrowing a clicker box

You can borrow a clicker box for the semester from the Library, exactly the same way you would borrow a book. The loan is free and the only thing you need is your student ID card (CAMIPRO).

To borrow your clicker, visit the Library main guichet at the Rolex Learning Center, Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm.

Loaned clickers will have to be returned at the end of the semester.
 

Using your smartphone

The information below is valid only if your teacher allows the use of smartphones in her/his class.

  1. Check that your device is compatible on the ResponseWare web page, under the “Specs” tab.
     
  2. Connect your device to the internet, preferably through Wifi.
    For help with connecting to the EPFL wifi.
     
  3. Depending on your device:
    • Devices with a compatible web browser: simply bookmark the http://responseware.eu web site to find it more easily in class.
    • Apple / Android smartphones and tablets: download and install the “ResponseWare” app from the Apple AppStore or from Android Google Play.
      When you launch the app for the first time, access the settings menu and choose the “Europe” region.

Entering a Response

  • Press the desired letter(s)/number(s).
  • Green light confirms that your response was received.
  • Red light indicates that your response was not received.
  • Flashing red light indicates that your clicker is on the wrong channel or that your instructor did not open the poll.
     

Changing your Response

If the poll is still open, you can modify your response by pressing a new letter/number. Only the final response you enter will be recorded.
 

Changing the channel

You should only change your channel from the default setting if your instructor tells you to do so and gives you a new channel code. The default chanel is 41.

  1. Press “Channel.”
  2. Enter the two digit channel number.
  3. Press “Channel” again. The light will turn green to confirm the change.

With the responseware.eu web site

This is the simplest and the most reliable voting method, it works on all types of internet connected devices provided that a compatible web browser is installed.

  1. Connect to wifi. Instructions on connecting to wifi
  2. With your browser, go to http://responseware.eu
  3. Enter the session number given by your instructor.
    Depending on the configuration chosen by your instructor, you may need to enter identification information.
    Click on “Join”.
  4. When the instructor asks a question, it will automatically appear on your screen and you will be able to select your desired response.
