The Social Science and Humanities (SHS) Program is an integral part of all study plans at EPFL. It enriches students’ education by providing them with a deeper understanding of human and societal issues, which is essential to a comprehensive view of the world.
Its mission is based on two complementary areas: teaching future engineers and scientists to understand the social realities that inform their choices, and developing the interpersonal skills that enhance their effectiveness and the quality of their work.
Thanks to an inter-institutional partnership with the University of Lausanne (UNIL), EPFL offers its students a choice of nearly 150 courses, covering a wide range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. These cross-disciplinary skills will serve as a compass for engineers, guiding students throughout their professional careers.

Foucault’s pendulum: demonstrating the Earth’s rotation!
