Switzerland actively encourages lifelong learning and professional development by offering various financial support mechanisms for learners. There are many ways to reduce your costs through tax deductions, federal or cantonal subsidies, as well as grants and loans. These forms of support vary depending on the federal or cantonal level, the type of training, and sometimes even the targeted professional field. This page provides an overview of the main support measures available in Switzerland, so you can optimize the funding of your continuing education project, regardless of your background or canton of residence.
Federal Level
Tax Deduction
Some or all of the costs of training and continuing education for professional purposes — including retraining costs — may be deducted from taxable income, provided the taxpayer meets one of the following conditions:
- Hold a diploma at the upper secondary level (e.g., Matura, VET certificate, baccalaureate, etc.).
- Be at least 20 years old and be pursuing training aimed at obtaining a qualification other than a first upper secondary diploma.

Cantonal Level
Grants and Study Loans
Cantonal grant offices review applications and decide who can benefit from a grant or loan. They can also provide information on other study funding options, including for continuing education or professional retraining.

Other Schemes and Practical Tips
- Cantonal Tax Deductions Some cantons offer additional tax deduction opportunities for continuing education expenses. Check with your canton’s tax authority.
- Employer Support Many Swiss employers support the continuing education of their employees, either by covering part or all of the costs, or by granting study leave. Don’t hesitate to inquire with your HR department.
- Private Foundations and Professional Associations Several foundations and professional associations offer grants or occasional financial support for continuing education in specific fields (healthcare, engineering, IT, etc.). Check the websites of associations in your sector.
