The EPFL School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) invites applications for an Associate / Full Professor of Urban Design and Landscape in the Institute of Architecture and the City (IA).
Urban design sits at the threshold of architecture, territory, landscape architecture and urbanism and focuses on large-scale design of cities and territories. In doing so, urban design requires a transdisciplinary approach that engages architecture, planning, landscape architecture, economics, social sciences and ecology. This holistic approach has become very strategic in the present time, deeply impacted by the climate crisis and social inequality. This present predicament requires a systematic, critical approach that nevertheless should offer tangible visions of ways in which cities and territories can be transformed and made more habitable for humans and non-humans.
The successful candidate will be a leading figure in the field, with a solid background in architectural and urban design, and outstanding scientific output, such as books, exhibitions, and papers on the topic. Two aspects are of high importance in the assessment of the candidate. Professional experience in urban projects such as master plans, regulatory planning, and research by design and outstanding track record of teaching experience in both design studio and theory courses. Most importantly, an interest in/or and experience of landscape design will be highly considered, as a clear positioning regarding spatial justice, and a deep awareness of the urgencies connected to the built and unbuilt environment, resource exhaustion, and the social inequalities they bear.
For teaching, the new professor will be affiliated with the Section of Architecture and will be expected to teach design studios, offer courses on theoretical and practical aspects of urban design, and supervise both master and doctoral students. Interest in developing innovative and inclusive pedagogies would be of importance. Because of the multidisciplinary and critical character of urban design, the successful candidate will act as a bridge between the different schools of ENAC. Service to the school and involvement in various academic bodies is expected.
The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching.
