Chair of Computational Mathematics and Simulation Science

Director of Chair: Professor Jan S Hesthaven

The research activities in the Chair focuses on the development, analysis and application of high-order accurate computational methods for time-dependent partial differential equations. In recent years this has included research activities in discontinuous Galerkin and spectral methods, certified reduced basis methods, methods of uncertainty quantification, methods for multiscale problems in time and space, fractional differential equations and the use of machine learning techniques in computational science with an emphasis on methods that preserve physical characteristics or the use of local neural networks to accelerate existing methods rather than replacing them.

While the emphasis in on the development and analysis of new methods, the research is often application driven and we generally maintain a strong focus on tying the theoretical developments to real applications, ranging from electromagnetics and plasma physics to combustion and geoscience.

There is also a sustained interest in the development of methods and algorithms for parallel computing, GPU accelerated computing and the development of resilient algorithms, to support the development and use of large scale computational tool to enable predictive simulation science.

For prospective students and postdoctoral assistants

If you are interested in joining the chair as a Master student, get in touch and we can discuss your research interests to see if there is overlap.

As a prospective doctoral students you will have to apply directly to the EPFL doctoral school for admission. You are welcome to contact me regarding research opportunities – something that will vary over time.

If you are uncertain about what you want to do, it may be worth consulting the CSE Master as an option – and an option that prepares you well for further studies at EPFL or elsewhere.

Should you be a prospective postdoctoral assistants looking for opportunities, you are welcome to contact me to discuss research and funding opportunities.

Before more serious looking into joining the chair as a student or a postdoctoral researchers, please take a look at a summary of expectations I have for new students and postdoctoral researchers.
