Qui sommes-nous

ArtLab’s vision

Over the past 20 years, technological innovation has caused fundamental changes in the acess to and consumption of culture and heritage – more specifically in fields such as: conservation, documentation, experimentation, and commercialisation. This has opened up a multitude of new economic opportunities, as well as bringing societal and ethical challenges. Technology continues to evolve, and countless discoveries are made on a daily basis. To embrace this (r)evolution, EPFL created the College of Humanites, which comprises 2 institutes, a Master’s programme and a platform open to the public: ArtLab.

ArtLab’s missions

Since 2016, ArtLab has acted at the intersection between Arts Research and Technologies (the origin of the ART in ArtLab). Its ambition is to build on the momentum of the digital disruption that is taking place in the cultural sector, and anticipate the future implications of technological innovation.

Its three core missions are to :

  • promote innovation in the fields of tangible and intangible cultural heritage management (conservation & documentation), museology, and public engagement;
  • facilitate experimentation by being a research platform for the interdependent fields of Art, Technology and the Humanities;
  • open minds to the porous nature of these disciplines, and raise awareness of the importance of dialogue across these fields for the benefit of society.
