Laboratory training and research projects

The practical education at the master in Molecular and Biological Chemistry is taking place in research laboratories at ISIC or elsewhere. Students are expected to contact the research group leaders to find a project. Please do it as early as possible, but not later than July 30 for the Fall Semester and January 15 for the Spring semester.

Project in molecular sciences Ia (CH- 492, 10 days in laboratory)

The goal is to get a first impression of a research laboratory. Registration form.

Project Ia is usually done in a single laboratory of SCGC.

Project in molecular sciences Ib (CH-491, 28 days in laboratory)

The goal is now to get a deeper insight into research. Registration form.

Project Ib can be done in one or several laboratories of SCGC. It can be done in another laboratory at EPFL, but with a SCGC co-supervisor. Having done at least one semester of master studies is required before doing project Ib.

Laboratory training / travail d’approfondissement (for masters who started in 2017)
or
Project in molecular sciences II (CH- 590 for master who started in 2018 and after)

The name of the course has been changed in 2018 from Laboratory training to Project in molecular sciences II, without change in form or content.

In respect to the «Règlement interne sur le Travail d’approfondissement pour master en chimie moléculaire et biologique», the Laboratory training for chemists aims at student to become familiar to theoretical and/or practical approaches applied by chemists. There is no commitment to perform an independent research work. It is possible to complete the Master’s thesis at the same place but with a true independent research work respecting EPFL requirements.

Taking into account the above purpose, the student spends a couple of months in academia (4) (including computational lab) or in industry (4-6) or to improve his/her skills.

Lab experience in academia
At ISIC or EPFL: Direct discussion with potential advisors
In other institutions: By own initiative or following advice form ISIC Prof/MER, identify an advisor AND find an ISIC mentor

Lab experience in industry
Through EPFL internship website: Internships corresponding to the aim of laboratory training for chemists will be published on ISA. These topics are already validated by the section.
Through company advertisement: Through own initiative and contacts with a company (for big companies, browse their career portal). The section MUST validate the job description before applying.

Internship agreement
An EPFL-Company internship agreement will be signed. More details and the agreement document (fr/eng) can be found on the Moodle Platform (Miscellaneous>SB Stages). Please ignore that the internship agreement contains the word “Engineering” in the title (Engineering Internship Agreement).

Contacts
Academic and scientific questions: Prof. Christian Heinis ([email protected])
Administrative and organization: Dr Catherine Marselli ([email protected])

After agreement, fill in the registration form, make it signed by the advisor (Prof. Christian Heinis) and return it to the SCGC secretary.

Trainings on job hunting
As soft skill improvements, very useful short trainings are proposed to students:
Course 1: Understanding the recruiter
Course 2: CV sections
Course 3: Letter of motivation
Course 4: Job interview
Course 5: Communication and organisation at work.

Registration is mandatory at https://bookwhen.com/stages

NB: Courses 1 to 3 are usually given in the Autumn semester. Exceptionally, these trainings could be repeated in Spring upon request. The coordination office provides support to students to help them search for their laboratory training for chemists.

Students also have the choice to complete a Minor (30 credits among the minors proposed at EPFL) instead of a laboratory training for chemists. (One cannot do both). – See Art.3, para d. of the Internal rules.

Deliverables
Please refer to art. 5, para. 1 of the Internal rules.
•    The Laboratory training for chemists’ supervisor or the professor in charge transmits an evaluation report to the section (Template provided by the section)
•    The student will provide an activity report
•    The company or the professor in charge may require other deliverables (internal report, oral presentation,..)

Validation of your FRAC
For lab experiences outside EPFL (academia or industry), you will need to register as Present in your FRAC, as well as enroll in the subject (CH-590) in the dedicated tab.
