In which fields of knowledge can I submit a proposal?
Projects may be submitted in all current domains of scientific or technological research activity at EPFL. Please, refer to the list of EPFL research domains.
I earned my PhD before 2011. Am I eligible to apply?
No, only candidates whose PhD was awarded between 1st January 2011 and 31st March 2020 (inclusive) are eligible to apply.
I do not have a passport from an African country. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, any researcher who is employed or due to be hired by a higher education institution in Africa is eligible to apply.
Is there any age limit?
No age restrictions apply. The program, however, is aimed at early-stage researchers who have the prospect of a long-term career at the time of the application.
I am already collaborating with a professor at EPFL. Can I submit a proposal with him/her?
There is a section on the online application form at stage 1 where you can indicate the name of an EPFL professor with whom you would like to work. Please do not contact this professor directly. Identification of and discussion with EPFL professors is to be done by the EPFL office only once applicants have successfully gone through Stage 1.
Do I have to submit a full research proposal at stage 1?
No, this is only required at Stage 2. At Stage 1, you must submit a 4-page proposal describing:
- The state of your own research
- The research project you would like to conduct through the Junior Faculty Development program
- How you think the collaboration with EPFL will contribute to the success of your project and the betterment of your host institution
Can I attach reference letters to my application at stage 1?
No, all letters will be requested directly from the referees by the EPFL office. Please, be sure, however, to contact your referees before submitting your application to ensure that they are willing to write a recommendation letter within one week of the submission deadline.
