Accompanying the digital transition
Through its Digital Education pillar, the Excellence in Africa initiative aims to promote the sustainable integration of digital education in African universities. Selected institutions receive support in the form of expertise and funding. The creation of Centres of Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE) includes:
- training in the technical and pedagogical aspect of digital education, and
- building the necessary infrastructure to produce quality digital educational content, such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Open Educational Resources (OER).
Creation of Centres of Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE) in six African universities
Forty-four universities from nineteen countries across Africa responded to our 2020 call for proposals. Based on the quality and relevance of their projects, the following African universities were selected:
- The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Arusha, Tanzania
- Moi University, Moi, Kenya
- Kabale University, Kabale, Uganda
- University of Abuja, Abuja, Nigeria
- École Supérieure Multinationale des Télécommunications, Dakar, Sénégal
- Université Nangui Abrogoua, Abidjan, Ivory Coast
Implementation phase
The EXAF Centre is working closely with each partner university to accommodate for their specific context and ensure they benefit from the programme. In 2021 and 2022, the EXAF Centre will provide the six universities with support to:
- Construct a studio with the necessary multimedia equipment and IT infrastructure to produce MOOCs and OER
- Train two technicians in the operation of the production studio
- Train three resident experts in instructional design who will act as associate trainers for their C-CoDE
- Train an initial cohort of 30 lecturers/professors in digital education
