The climate and biodiversity crises are leaving scars on our planet. To find solutions to these challenges, we need technologies enabling environmental monitoring which is  spatially and temporally resolved. The good news is that we now have access to an impressive amount of data acquired by satellites, airplanes, drones and citizen sensors. In this talk, I will show some recent learning algorithms we developed to make sense of this remote sensing data, as well as the interactive approaches we are designing to make them available to the public.

Originally from Ticino, Devis completed his PhD at University of Lausanne, where he studied kernel methods for hyperspectral satellite data. He then traveled the world as a postdoc, first at University of València, then at CU Boulder and finally back to EPFL, at ENAC. In 2014, he became SNF professor at University of Zurich, and in 2017 he moved to Wageningen University, where he was chair of the Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing Laboratory. Since September, he is back to EPFL, where he leads the Environmental Computational  Science and Earth Observation laboratory (ECEO) in Sion. There, he studies the Earth from above.
