Flow visualization using an open source syringe pump

An open source syringe pump was used to perform flow visualisation on a flapping wing. The pump was built using 3D printed parts and controlled with a circuit including an Arduino UNO board and a DRV8825 driver. It was designed to be autonomous: the user does not need to alter the code to adjust or read the speed. To avoid flow disturbances a wing was designed such that the dye could be introduced inside of the wing via a plastic tube to exit at the leading and trailing edge, allowing for visualisation of leading and trailing edge vortices in different colours. This makes them clearly distinguishable. The result is a robust, simple and efficient flow visualisation system that is easily reusable and reproducible.
