Swiss Solar Boat

Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge is a competition organised by the Yatch Club of Monaco, which aims to develop alternative propulsion systems using only renewable energies. EPFL is participating with the Swiss Solar Boat team, created in 2019. Our goal? – Build a boat on a foil over 6 metres long, operating only with solar panels. Ideally, it will reach a top speed of 30 knots (about 55 km/h) with the pilot on board.

The project
The competition consists of several races: the Qualifying Race where we must complete the fastest lap over 0. 5 nautical miles, the Championship Race which is a 1-on-1 race over a 0. 1 nautical mile circuit, the Fleet Race which is an endurance race where we must complete the longest distance in 4 hours, and finally, the Slalom Race where we must be the fastest on a 0. 2 nautical mile slalom. Obviously, our goal is to be first in the different categories. This sounds ambitious for our first participation, but with a united and organized team everything is possible!
Link with the SKIL
The design and construction of the boats is made possible in part through SKIL, a place of work, discussion and knowledge sharing. SKIL also provides us with well-maintained machines such as a CNC, 3D printers and a laser cutter, among others. Another advantage of SKIL is the various training courses on the machines, which make it easier for us to design and produce while guaranteeing quality work. Finally, the help of experts in advanced technical fields such as composites is highly appreciated. For a project of this size, we must save as much time as possible in order to be efficient, SKIL simply becomes an irreproachable workplace for us.
