Les surfaces de ciment et de béton armé. Une histoire des coffrages et du traitement des surfaces
Depuis le XIXe siècle, le béton armé, sous ses diverses formes, du dosage des agrégats et du calcul statique à l’invention de figures structurelles toujours plus complexes, a généré une littérature spécialisée extrêmement abondante partout dans le monde et plus particulièrement en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Cependant, dans aucun des nombreux manuels et essais consacrés au béton armé il n’a été tenté de dresser un premier bilan de l’évolution des coffrages, qui est pourtant l’un des éléments fondamentaux dans la fabrication du béton.
La recherche intitulée The surfaces of cement and reinforced concrete. A history of the formwork and processing of the surface, financée par le European Research Council depuis 2009, entend combler cette lacune en retraçant l’évolution des techniques de mise en œuvre du ciment et du béton à partir des premières expériences menées à l’époque romaine jusqu’aux productions les plus récentes.
Le projet de recherche se propose de reconstruire les diverses manières de traiter les surfaces après décoffrage afin d’obtenir des effets particuliers de poli ou de rustique, et toutes les déclinaisons intermédiaires possibles.
L’objectif de cette recherche est aussi d’offrir une documentation la plus étendue et la plus complète possible sur l’ensemble de la littérature et des exemples les plus significatifs de la production architecturale internationale en termes de coffrages et de surfaces du béton dans le vaste arc temporel considéré.
Etablir un bilan des types de constructions et de traitements des surfaces, et analyser dans cette optique aussi les plus importantes architectures du XXe siècle, ne peuvent qu’être d’une extrême utilité aussi bien pour l’historiographie de l’architecture, qui disposera ainsi d’un instrument scientifique pour évaluer les œuvres sous l’angle des rapports entre forme et matière, que pour la construction contemporaine, pour qui les problématiques techniques artistiques du traitement du béton apparent restent encore fondamentales.
Les résultats de la recherche feront l’objet de plusieurs essais sous forme de livres avec une abondante documentation iconographique (des dessins de projets aux photographies de chantier).

Treatise on Concrete
Thanks to the ERC Advanced Grant, Roberto Gargiani, in collaboration with the Presses Polytechniques Universitaires (EPFL Press), has defined a collection dedicated at the history of concrete : the Treatise on Concrete.
The volumes of the Treatise on Concrete intend to offer a new and documented vision of the evolution of construction techniques and of the creative potential and formal expressions of concrete, from antiquity to the present time. Each book in the series will be based on specific archival research; the analysis of scientific, technical and iconographic original sources; and the investigation into documents made available by companies, engineers, architects and artists. The full spectrum of the use of concrete will be covered, including the building of foundations, ports, moles, bridges, vaults, domes, fortresses, bunkers, houses and monuments, as well as the manufacture of artificial stones and sculptures. In addition, the volumes will address the theoretical issues of béton brut, Brutalism and the true nature of matter. All volumes focus on the techniques and materials for the manufacture of formwork, from wood to fabric; on the meaning of the imprint; on the surface processing of concrete by hand or with machine; and on the composition of the mixture. The series of books aims to provide the scientific community with an unique and updated reference on the historical and contemporary uses of concrete, which will open a new chapter in the knowledge of this crucial material for architectural construction, as well as for masterpieces of engineering and art.
