Modelisation du sciage dans le béton avec XFEM

The project was aiming to provide to the student(s) the opportunity to develop within a qualified environment (LSMS EPFL) a simple numerical tool, using modern cutting edge methods applied to the alkali reaction in concrete. This work was in collaboration with the consulting firm STUCKY.

The phenomenon of alkali chemical reaction is a structure disease characterized by concrete swelling. A temporary solution (for dams) is to saw the structure in order to relax the stresses.

Using a 1D numerical code, we used a the XFEM numerical method (which introduces a discontinuity independently of the mesh) to provide a practical tool for modeling timber in the structure.
