Bachelor Project – Spring 2015
The purposes of this project is to do a finite element analysis of the Luzzone Dam during an earthquake. The project was done in relation with the civil engineering office Stucky for the International Commission on Large Dam (ICOLD).
The main points that was addressed in this project are:
-
Initial thermal conditions
-
Static analysis with the self-weight, hydrostatic and silt pressure, and thermal field
-
Dynamic analysis with the seismic acceleration
-
Hydrodynamic with the use of the Westergaard formula to take into account the mass of the water moving
-
Particular work was done into implementing two new elements (second order hexahedron and pentahedron) and a advanced treatement of a big mesh
-
Modal shape analysis of the structure, with the computation of the first 12 eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This allows us to define clearly the damping coefficient α and β, use in the Raleygh method approach.
