By plane
Visitors planning to arrive by plane will have to land at Geneva airport (the closest – 40 mins by train or car to Lausanne), Zurich (the largest), or Basel (Bâle in French), and from there proceed to Lausanne either by train or by car (see below). To see the location of the above airports in relation to Lausanne, have a look at this map of Switzerland. One possible alternative is to land in Paris, France, and take the high-speed TGV train directly to Lausanne (see the train section of this document below).
By train + metro
See the Swiss Railways server for timetable and costs to Lausanne train station (“Lausanne Gare CFF”).
Once you are at the central station in Lausanne:
- Take the “M2” metro from “Gare CFF” to “Lausanne-Flon”
- Take the “M1” metro from “Lausanne-Flon” to the station “EPFL”
Details: Exit the main railway station on the North side (the side that is opposite from the lake). The station opens on a busy plaza; cross the street and enter the metro station. Purchase a fare ticket valid for 2 zones (11,12), the cost is CHF 3.00. Take the M2 in the “Croisettes” direction and get off at the first station. In the same station, take the M1 metro in the “Renens-CFF” direction; the last stop before you get off is called “UNIL-Sorge.” Get off at the “EPFL” station and follow the map below.
By taxi
Tell the driver you would like to go to the “EPFL, building ELE by the Esplanade”. The trip takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on traffic, and normally costs around 25 CHF.
By car
Highways are labelled with green signs in Switzerland. You must buy a 40 CHF windscreen sticker (one year validity) at the border or petrol stations. On the motorway always follow “Lausanne Sud” and exit the motorway at “Sortie UNIL-EPFL” (green label on map above). Finally, the picture below shows to you where LIS is as you enter the campus (click here for details). There is public parking just at the end of tree-lined road (type your space number at the vending machine).
