Factor Analytical Modeling of Biochemical Data

J.L. Harmon, P. Duboc and D. Bonvin
Completed project (1994-1995)

This project demonstrated the applicability of factor-analytical methods for the resolution of biochemical reaction networks. These methods, which are well known in the chemometrics community, were adapted to the analysis of data from bioprocesses. A new technique involving the estimation of reaction stoichiometries and of reaction extents was proposed. This technique proved to be especially useful when all reactions were not present at all times. Theoretical concepts were applied to experimental data from the fed-batch production of yeast. Reaction stoichiometries and extents were estimated for the fermentation of glucose and for the oxidation of glucose and ethanol.
