FAR from home refers to the problem of displacement – specifically forced displacement of individuals, families and communities as a result of conflict and natural disaster.
The studio explores potential contributions of architecture to humanitarian assistance provided to refugees and internally-displaced people. Rather than camp settings that are amenable to generic design, the studio focusses on displacement in established urban settings through design of spaces for shelter, health, education and other humanitarian needs. Humanitarian architecture in urban settings must develop strategies of infill, extension and adaptation of existing urban networks.
The studio addresses urban environments associated with the conflict in Syria – in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. In each context, different social, political and economic conditions suggest different design strategies, including different approaches to building resources, economy and durability.
