Simulating pressures and temperatures of Earth’s core
The laser-heated diamond anvil cell (DAC) is the only static device capable of generating the entire range of pressures and temperatures in the Earth’s interior, up to ~360 GPa and ~5700 K in the inner core. To reach these extreme conditions, DAC experiments require samples 10-200 microns in diameter. In our lab we are developing new techniques for assembling micro-rocks for experiments on Earth’s mantle and core.
